Meet Dorette
A Passionate Woodwind Specialist and Music Educator
Dorette, a South African-born woodwind specialist, has been inspiring students and audiences with her love for music since 1994. Her musical journey began at age seven with piano lessons, but it was at nine that she found her true passion—the clarinet. This discovery ignited a lifelong devotion to music, leading her to master an impressive range of instruments, including the flute, saxophone, bassoon, and classical guitar. Her dedication to both performance and education has made her a dynamic and influential figure in the world of music.
Academic Excellence
Dorette’s academic credentials are as remarkable as her musical talents. She earned a *BMus in Orchestral Studies* from Stellenbosch University in 1998, followed by an *Honours degree in Clarinet Performance* in 1999. To further her expertise as an educator, she completed a *Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)* from the University of Nottingham in 2020. In 2024, Dorette added another prestigious achievement to her repertoire: a *Certificate in Music Therapy* from Berklee College of Music, enhancing her ability to harness music’s transformative power for emotional and personal growth.
Teaching with Passion
Since launching her teaching career in South Africa in 1994, Dorette has worked with students aged three to fifty-three, nurturing their musical skills and building their confidence. After relocating to Dubai in 2013, she continued to share her expertise, teaching woodwind, piano, guitar, and music theory while preparing students for Trinity and ABRSM examinations. Currently, Dorette serves as a *Primary School Music Teacher* at GEMS Wellington Academy Al Khail in Dubai Hills, where her vibrant energy and student-centered approach inspire young learners to develop a lifelong love for music.
A Versatile Performer
As a performer, Dorette’s versatility shines through her passion for chamber music, jazz bands, wind bands, and orchestral playing. She has performed as a freelance musician across Dubai and holds the prestigious role of *Principal Clarinetist* of the Emirates Community Orchestra. In the past, she also served as *Co-Principal Bassoonist* of the Dubai International Orchestra, a testament to her skill and versatility. Her experience conducting various ensembles further highlights her leadership and deep connection to music.
A Student-Centered Philosophy
Dorette’s teaching philosophy is rooted in her belief that music is a powerful tool for personal expression and transformation. Her student-centered approach, combined with her ability to communicate ideas with creativity and enthusiasm, ensures that each student makes exceptional progress. Whether guiding beginners through their first notes or preparing advanced students for examinations, Dorette’s greatest strength is her ability to inspire confidence and character through music
